During these unusual times our teachers are thinking of new ways to connect with their classes, this is increasingly involving new technology! Please understand that our teachers are working hard to regularly set work for children online and to virtually monitor and possibly interact with the children. This may look slightly different for each class at the moment, as each teacher is navigating their own journey with this new technology. Therefore, we ask that you continue to be supportive during these unprecedented times and not necessarily expect instant replies to queries and understand that sometimes feedback may just be a "like or a smiley face"! If we all work together we will come through this stronger and with an increased sense of community! Happy learning!

Welcome to Minnows & Sardines Class Page

We are a reception class.

Dear Minnows and Sardines,

This week we will be looking at Life Cycles, including the life cycle of a frog, dandelion and butterfly. The children will be re-creating models of the different stages of each life cycle and in our class bubble we will be using play dough as well as junk modelling to help illustrate this.  If you would like to join in with this at home, here is a link to a  'no cook' play dough recipe. https://theimaginationtree.com/best-ever-no-cook-play-dough-recipe/  which uses...

  1. cups plain flour (all purpose)
  2. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (baby oil and coconut oil work too)
  3. 1/2 cup salt.
  4. 2 tablespoons cream of tartar. (optional)
  5. 1 to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
  6.  food colouring (optional...we have used green for the frogs and different colours for the butterflies).

A continued reminder to ensure that your child is practising there phonics skills daily you can use PhonicsPlay https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/ or the DfE online daily phonics lessons.  https://wandleenglishhub.org.uk/lettersandsounds/reception

Children should be reading daily and although you will have likely run out of reading scheme books now there are some available online as ebooks on  https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/

Dear Minnows and Sardines,

This week is our 'School's Sports Week'. Where we will be taking part in a 'BEAT THE TEACHER' sport challenge each day - leading up to our Whole school (in bubbles and at home) sports day on Thursday, 2nd July. (Some of you would have seen the sports day powerpoint a few weeks ago for a practise). Please talk to your little ones about the importance of staying active and exercising to help keep us strong and healthy and remember (especially in this heat) to drink lots of water,  use sun cream and wear a sun hat.

Please think of a Team Name and send this to your class teacher by Monday 29th June so we can add it to our overall  score sheet.

In addition to the sports day, a class teacher will upload an activity to the class dojo page each day and challenge the children to beat their results -  a winner will be announced each day.

On Monday, children will be invited to make salt dough medals - ingredients are just salt and flour (please see instructions in resources below). Later in the week, they will be making Olympic rings (so please save some toilet roll / kitchen roll tubes or plastic cups).

Please continue to practise your phonics skills daily: https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/

W/c 18th May 2020,

Hello everybody,

We want to say a huge thank you to all the heroes that sent in video messages to our Minnows and Sardines last week. We had Lifeguard, dental hygienist, fire fighter, police officer and ambulance drivers all helping us to stay safe and well.

This week we will be exploring other stories from our theme of Into the Woods.  Weekly overview

As you know it is really important that the children read everyday, I know that we will have all exhausted our book collections at home and the libraries are not an option at the moment but you can access many of the reading scheme books for free through an ebook library

If you are members of the East Sussex Library service they too have increased their free online ebook content.

The Inspire Charity that runs our Buster Book Club has launched a social media campaign aimed

at younger readers to encourage them to keep reading through lockdown. Please send in your

photos or if you have twitter or Facebook you can share them  yourselves with the

#readwithted #keepreading  https://www.kmcharityteam.co.uk/

**** Updated 19th April ****

We hope that you all have had a lovely Easter eating lots of choc!

As the lockdown and school closures has been extended we have looked carefully at what we had intended to be covering with the children in class this term and have made some adjustments, sourced some materials that will support you in working on some of these things at home together.

We will continue to use the Class Dojo page as a primary way of providing online learning. We are delighted that 70% of Reception children are now logged in and increasing numbers of you are sending photos and videos of your wonderful home learning, keep it up.

Please encourage other parents to check their emails to set up their accounts. If anybody is experiencing any difficulty you can contact us via the school office office@ryeprimary.co.uk  and we will get back to you.

This term we would have been starting Phase 4 phonics. Mrs.Isted will be uploading an online lesson to Dojo. You can also use the link bellow to activities and parent information packs. We have included Phase 2 and Phase 3 for you to also recap. Please remember phase 4 is NEW and so should be challenging, go slowly… we recommend short daily sessions to help reinforce and improve phonic skills.

Remember to use the Jolly Phonics songs which you can find for free on YouTube (please remember your safety and check your parent controls are set on any device the children are using).

Cebeebies Alphablocks is educational tv that requires no supervision.

We use Phonics Play in school and the company has made all its resources available FOR FREE! The children will love using these familiar games and now they can move on to the Phase 4 challenges.

Our theme this term was to be ‘Into the Woods’ and our key text is Little Red Riding Hood. We have lots planned around this so keep an eye on the dojo page.

Missing all the children and looking forward to seeing you all as soon as we can.

In the meantime the Dojo posts are helping cheer everybody up and keep connected.

We thought it might be helpful to upload a timetable (see the link below) each week so that you can prepare yourselves for each activity and gather any necessary resources. Please note that the resources are just suggested ideas- you can use whatever you have available, please don't worry.

Dear all our Marvellous Minnows and Super Sardines (big and small),

We are keen to support and not over load you. In this time of uncertainty, as adults we can easily feel anxious and overwhelmed, so we can only imagine how some of out little people may be feeling with even less information and more things out of their control. Our children need us more than ever to support their emotional wellbeing, to reassure, comfort and protect.

You may find some useful tips on how to talk to your children about the virus here https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/coronavirus/talking-to-children

You may find the activities at home useful to support practise of familiar skills through Easter break.

Wishing all our families a safe and hopefully sunny Easter Break. Please check back with the class dojo page after the Easter break for next terms learning.
